Cece Obsessions
Every book on this page earned four or five stars from me. I am picky. Take that seriously.
This is not a “best of” list some algorithm built. These are the books that made me cancel plans, reread chapters at 2 a.m., and text people who did not ask. First the shelves — my obsessions sorted by what, exactly, I’m obsessed with. Then every four- and five-star read I’ve ever reviewed, newest first, so you can see what’s currently living in my head.
The rules: the rating is the rating (I don’t round up), four stars is still a wholehearted yes, and every cover links to the real rant.
The obsession shelves
A book can live on more than one shelf. Each one tells you the flavor of fictional disaster you’re signing up for, and why I’d hand you that exact book first.
Powerful. Dangerous. Morally grey. Devoted to one person.
The darkness, the devotion, the way he takes up the whole room without raising his voice. This is the gateway drug to my favorite kind of fictional man, and the Bargainer is the one who ruined my standards first.
If you already know you want this energy with the lights off, the 18+ version of this shelf lives on Your Kink, Your Kindle.
Classic Greek tragedy. Modern retellings. Both, please.
Destroyer of Light is the one I push on everyone: a proper, old-gods, AMAZING tragedy that follows the myth where it actually goes. Don’t read it for comfort. Read it for the gut punch.
For the modern version, shout out to Scarlett St. Clair: her Hades and Persephone books are the glossy, contemporary take, and her King of Battle and Blood is on this site at five stars for the same dark-romantic-fantasy reasons.
Destroyer of LightHades & Persephone #2 · Rachel Alexander · ★★★★★Classic Greek, written like the myth deserves. Tragic in the real sense. Start with Receiver of Many, then let this one wreck you.Read my rant →
King of Battle and BloodAdrian X Isolde #1 · Scarlett St. Clair · ★★★★★The modern mythology voice, pointed at a vampire king and a wife who’d rather kill him. Dark, dramatic, and it knows exactly what it’s doing.Read my rant →
Monster romance and the men who will burn the world for one woman.
The defining trait: he doesn’t just want her. She is his wife, that’s settled, and the rest of the plot is him protecting that fact with his whole terrifying body. Monstrous on the outside, completely gone for her on the inside. I will obsess over this dynamic every single time.
LuxuriaShades of Sin #1 · Colette Rhodes · ★★★★★The key starting point for this shelf. A demon who has decided, and a whole kingdom that is going to have to deal with it.Read my rant →
King of Battle and BloodAdrian X Isolde #1 · Scarlett St. Clair · ★★★★★Arranged marriage to a vampire king who is immediately, unreasonably devoted. Obsessed-husband energy with fangs.Read my rant →
Married by chapter three. Falling for him by the end.
The Winter King is my favorite fantasy for the sudden-bride trope, full stop. A heroine who has been through hell, a king who is so alpha and so hot it should be illegal, and an actual world-building, character-developing novel underneath the romance. Do not let the cover fool you.
This gets its own shelf, not a generic “fantasy romance” label, because the trope is the point.
He likes control. He likes “daddy.” He does not need a label for it.
Knight is my favorite dominant, possessive man in all of romance. He likes control, he likes being called daddy, and the book never has to slap a BDSM label on any of it. That’s a very particular flavor of dominance, and I like it too. It’s a distinction that matters: this is possessiveness as devotion, not a contract.
Kristen Ashley kicks ass and deserves her own spotlight. She gave us Knight and, from the other end of her range, Wildest Dreams: two completely different reasons to read her.
KnightUnfinished Hero #1 · Kristen Ashley · ★★★★★My favorite possessive, controlling, daddy-coded hero. No kink labels, no apologies. Still the one I measure the others against.Read my rant →
Wildest DreamsFantasyland #1 · Kristen Ashley · ★★★★★Sunshine girl, magical winter world, cold Viking king for a husband. All the stars. Proof that Kristen Ashley can do anything.Read my rant →
When the bond is the whole point.
Tairen Soul is my favorite, period. A fae king who has been half-mad with grief for a thousand years, a woodcarver’s daughter who turns out to be his truemate, and a bond that rewrites both of them. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it series and you know where I stand.
Start with Lord of the Fading Lands. I adore these characters as a whole, and I will still critique the hell out of the sequels.
She’s hiding as a man. He loves her anyway. The sea does the rest.
Captive of the Pirate King: incredible. Incredible. A heroine disguised as a man on a ship where the rules of society just don’t apply, a pirate king who falls for her before he even understands why, adventure on the seas, and romantic tension you could cut with a cutlass.
Wealth, fae politics, power, and an extravagant edge.
Did you know you wanted gangster fae urban fantasy? Well, shut up, because yes you do. Geneva Lee’s filthy-rich fae get their own lane: money, court politics, a city that runs on favors, and a romance with teeth. Fallen Court is INCREDIBLE, and I reread the first book in a day the moment I remembered the sequel was coming.
Filthy Rich FaeFilthy Rich Fae #1 · Geneva Lee · ★★★★★Start here. Gangster fae, a heroine in over her head, and a city that’s prettier and meaner than it looks.Review coming
Fallen CourtFilthy Rich Fae #2 · Geneva LeeThe one I was desperate for. Bigger, richer, and the court politics finally come due.Review coming
Not a hot read. Not a truly dark read. Just insanely well written.
Rose in Chains was so insanely well written I’m still upset about it. The plot is dark, the tension is relentless, and the two timelines kept yanking me back and forth until I gave up and read it in one sitting. But be clear on what you’re getting: on the real dark-romance scale, what the main characters actually do together is nothing extreme, and their time on the page together is limited.
This recommendation sells the writing and the tension. If you want a hot, enjoy-the-ride read, that’s a different shelf.
For the reader who’s tried it all and wants something genuinely different.
This is the wildcard shelf. Kait Ballenger’s Original Sinners takes the “apocalyptic Horseman bringing the end” premise and turns it into Lucifer and his siblings enjoying the clout. It is not like the other books on this page, and that is exactly why it’s here.
Wicked BelieverOriginal Sinners #2 · Kait Ballenger · ★★★★★Hell’s family business, unusual premise, and a tone I’d never seen pulled off before. Absolutely adored it.Review coming
Wolf energy, territorial instincts, and a Scottish accent.
The Wolf King is my most recent great shifter romance: think Bride, but Scottish werewolves. Iconic. I kept wanting MORE and then I got so much of it the angst nearly killed me. If you like that, go to Feral Sins next: there are shapeshifters and then there are SHAPESHIFTERS, and Suzanne Wright writes the second kind. Then anything by Eve Langlais, who does shifter romance with a sense of humor and zero shame.
The Wolf KingThe Wolf King #1 · Lauren Palphreyman · ★★★★★Scottish werewolves, a wolf king, and angst so good I couldn’t breathe. Start here.Read my rant →
Feral SinsThe Phoenix Pack #1 · Suzanne Wright · ★★★★★If you loved The Wolf King: an awesome wolf romance I enjoyed way too much. Ignore the cover. Trust me.Read my rant →
Delicate Freakn’ FlowerFreakn’ Shifters #1 · Eve Langlais · ★★★★★My Eve Langlais gateway. Loud, hilarious, filthy shifter romance; she has a whole backlist like this.Read my rant →
Sometimes you don’t need another brooding king.
Sometimes you need supernatural chaos and a thoroughly entertaining time. Cecy Robson’s Weird Girls is my favorite crazy-fun urban fantasy: the Weird sisters, the asshole vampire, the mischievous werewolf best friend, the nerdy magic scientist and the werealpha who should come with a warning label. The sass is excellent, the pace is fast, and the character development is the jackpot.
Magical crimes. Supernatural investigators. Cases the regular police did not sign up for.
I ADORE paranormal detectives, so they get more than a tag buried under urban fantasy. Give me a half-feral mercenary cleaning up magical Atlanta, a coyote mechanic who keeps getting dragged into werewolf politics, a half-fae private eye who cannot stay out of trouble, and I will read the entire series in a month. Mystery pacing, a found family, and a slow-burn that takes ten books to pay off: that is my comfort food.
The case files here are every four- and five-star investigation on the site, highest rated first, straight from my reviews.

Neverland, but make it a threat.
The Never King is a dark Peter Pan retelling and it is CRAZY: a Pan who never grew up and never got nicer, Lost Boys who are not boys, and a Darling girl who was always going to end up in Neverland whether she wanted to or not. This is its own lane: twisted fairy tales, dangerous fantasy, and morally questionable men. Not the Scottish-wolf shelf, not the shadow-daddy shelf. Darker and stranger than both.
The Never KingVicious Lost Boys #1 · Nikki St. Crowe · ★★★★★Dark Peter Pan with the Lost Boys as a why-choose. Unhinged in the way I mean as a compliment.Review coming
The Dark OneVicious Lost Boys #2 · Nikki St. Crowe · ★★★★★Book two. If the first one got its hooks in, this is where Neverland gets worse, in the good way.Review coming
Clearly labeled, so you can find exactly the dynamic you’re after.
Kaelen is my favorite omega / knotting book, full stop. If you don’t know what omegaverse is, the short version: alphas, omegas, heats, scent, and a biology that makes every possessive instinct literal. If you do know, you already know why this shelf exists. 18+ only, obviously.
Fated or KnotUnseelieVerse: The Omega MasqueradeFae omegaverse at a masquerade. On the shelf because the premise alone earns it.Review coming
Not rated yet. Already obsessed.
No stars here, because I haven’t finished them, so they don’t get to sit with the four- and five-star crowd. They just get to be mentioned, loudly.
- Her Soul for a Crown · Alysha Rameera Cover obsessionMy favorite cover right now. Stopped me mid-scroll. EXCUSE ME, what is this beauty.
- The Last Raven · Helen Glynn Jones VampiresA human heir in a world ruled by vampires. Looks like a great vampire romance and it’s next on the pile.

These shelves are my obsessions, not a genre map. If you’d rather browse by what’s in the book, the genre shelves and author guides below are where to go next, and if you want to know what four stars means from me, here’s how I review.
