FORTY-THREE SAVED QUOTES.

FORTY. THREE.

My God, it’s only getting BETTER.

Usually, book one wows me, and book two leaves me wanting. Something’s missing, the magic isn’t quite the same, or I’m left wondering whether the author can actually deliver on all the things that made me fall in love with the first book.

Liv Zander said, Oh, you thought you were obsessed before? Hold my feathers.

Because THIS? This is how you write a sequel.

꧁The World Building꧂

The gothic atmosphere is BACK, babes, and we’re going DEEPER.

Everything I loved about book one is still here, but now the pieces are coming together in ways that make the entire story feel bigger. The stakes are higher, the emotional investment is REAL, and suddenly all those little things that had me feral in the first book are paying off.

And then we get moments like this:

“I am a Raven,” I muttered to myself. “Wind is to my wings what the wave is to a ship: a persistent companion, sometimes caressing, other times chastising, but always essential in the journey.”

HELLO, SYMBOLISM. HELLO, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

I love when a character’s identity becomes more than a label, when the things they’ve been taught to fear or suppress start becoming part of understanding who they actually are.

And this series is full of those delicious little threads that make you want to go back and reconsider EVERYTHING.

꧁The Characters꧂

Malyr. Sebian. Galantia.

MY PROBLEMATIC LITTLE AVIARY.

One of my favorite things about this installment is getting to see the characters develop beyond the initial impressions we formed in book one. Their relationships have more weight now. Their choices hit harder. And the emotional history between them makes everything feel that much more intense.

Malyr continues to be a walking collection of red flags wrapped in enough shadow and obsession to make me forget I have standards.

Exhibit A:

A spread-winged raven perched on a skull. “I will come for you,” Malyr’s dark threat purred through my memory, “because you are mine.”

SIR. SIRRRRR.

I would like to remind everyone that possessiveness is not a substitute for healthy communication.

I would ALSO like to remind everyone that this is a fictional man, and I have elected to make that distinction somebody else’s problem.

And then we have Sebian, who brings his own particular brand of chaos to the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Galantia is giving us so much more to chew on this time around. Her perspective, her choices, and everything she’s navigating make her journey especially compelling.

Which brings me to something I found particularly entertaining about this book: the POV of a liar.

When you’re following someone whose perspective has already given you reasons to question what you’re being told, every little detail becomes suspicious.

Every explanation deserves scrutiny.

Every new piece of information has you mentally rearranging the furniture in your brain.

꧁The Emotional Payoff꧂

THIS. RIGHT. HERE.

This is what I wanted from a sequel.

The first book got me invested. This book took everything I loved about it and delivered the emotional payoff of finally seeing it ALL COME TOGETHER.

And some of these moments hit HARD.

“But until then, let me hold you.”

EXCUSE ME WHILE I STARE AT A WALL.

Sometimes it’s the simplest words that get you. After all the darkness, the hurt, the fighting, and the emotional gymnastics these characters put us through, a moment of tenderness can absolutely destroy me.

And then there’s this:

“The moment I learned of Lord Brisden’s discovery from my maid, I abandoned the stables to find you,” she said.

It’s the urgency for me. The way relationships are shaped by everything that came before, and how a single action can mean so much more when you understand the history behind it.

That’s what I love about seeing a series develop over multiple books. We already know these characters. We’re invested in their mess. We know what they’ve survived.

So when the story finally lets us feel the payoff?

I AM UNWELL.

꧁The Plot꧂

AND THEN THERE’S THE TWIST.

I DID NOT SEE IT COMING.

Not even a little bit.

I genuinely thought I had a handle on where things were going, and then Liv Zander came along and rearranged my entire understanding of the story.

The reveal was so well done. It surprised me, made sense within the world, and gave me that glorious feeling of realizing the story has been playing a much bigger game than I thought.

And I am NOT telling you what it is.

Not a whisper. Not a hint. Not even a suspicious little feather left on the windowsill.

You deserve to experience that moment for yourself.

I will say that I especially enjoyed the way this book plays with what characters know, what they believe, and what the reader thinks they understand.

Because when you’re reading a POV that makes you question the narrator, the tiniest details suddenly become potential evidence.

And when the truth finally lands?

OH, THAT’S GOOD.

꧁The Overall꧂

Shadows So Cruel is everything I want from a second book in a dark fantasy romance series.

It builds on the first installment instead of trying to recreate it. It deepens the characters, delivers on the emotional setup, expands the world, and throws in a plot twist that genuinely caught me off guard.

Book one made me fall for this series. Book two made me even more obsessed.

Forty-three saved quotes later, I have absolutely no complaints.

The ravens are getting more dangerous, the feelings are getting more complicated, and apparently my ability to function normally while reading this series has completely disappeared.

The Court of Ravens has me in its claws, and I am NOT fighting my way out.

Nevermore? MORE, PLEASE. 🐦‍⬛🖤
