KISS KISS KISS. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. REVEALS. FEELINGS. MORE FEELINGS. I would like everyone to stop making choices for five minutes so I can catch my breath—and also I would like the love interest back on the page immediately.
꧁The Love Interest꧂
By this point, Slade/Rip has crossed the line from “hot as fuck” into “why is this fictional man taking up so much space in my brain?” The attraction is one thing, but the emotional stakes are what make it stick. I am not just watching two attractive people orbit each other; I am invested in what they mean to each other and what happens when the world keeps getting in the way.
The tension is delicious because the story is not letting the relationship exist in a convenient little bubble. Identity, conflict, and the consequences of what these characters know—or do not know—keep crashing into the romance. Kissing and fighting can coexist, apparently, and this book is committed to the bit.
꧁The Characters꧂
Auren’s journey is no longer only about realizing she deserves better. She is moving into the consequences of that realization, and the people around her have to confront what they believe about themselves and each other. The reveals matter because they change the emotional map—not just the trivia section of the fantasy world.
And the side characters are becoming a dangerous investment. You know the type: somebody shows up giving “rude ice bitch with no morals,” and you think, fine, I will simply not care about this person. Then the story gives you more context, and suddenly you are emotionally attached and praying they survive. That is how you get me. That is how you ruin my week.
꧁The World Building꧂
The stakes are starting to feel enormous. This is the point where the series gives me that Queen of Shadows-level feeling: identities collide, characters confront each other, and the story becomes much more than one person trying to escape a terrible situation. The world is widening, and the consequences are widening with it.
꧁The Plot & The Emotional Damage꧂
The book balances romantic tension with confrontations and reveals, so the emotional investment keeps deepening rather than resetting. The relationship is more compelling because it is happening inside a story that keeps forcing these characters to face things. I want the kisses. I want the fights. I want the answers. I want everyone to stop being in danger. I know this is fantasy, so obviously that last request is unreasonable.
꧁The Lines That Had Me Unwell꧂
“Why the fuck is there a bruise on your cheek?” The protectiveness, the fury, the immediate change in the atmosphere. HELLO.
“I want you soul, mind, and body.” This is not a casual-dalliance man. This man has arrived with INTENTIONS.
“You are my own good.” The emotional stakes are officially in the room, and they brought a knife.
“You can call me Slade.” The name reveal has already done its job by this point, and I still love the audacity of the delivery.
“Kiss kiss kiss fight fight fight.” Not a book excerpt, just my completely reasonable summary of the romantic tension and conflict in this installment.
Overall
As its own book: Gleam delivers escalating emotional stakes, confrontations, and reveals. The romance has more weight because the characters are changing and the plot keeps putting pressure on them.
Within the series: This is where the story starts feeling genuinely huge. The series is moving beyond Auren’s immediate survival and into identities, loyalties, and consequences that reach much further. The love-interest rant is now fully entangled with the rest of the world—and I am not escaping.
