Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
We won the job but oh shit now we actually have to do the thing!
꧁The Characters꧂
As a whole, this book was the one that made me SCREAM when I first read it and understand that the darkness of this series was DECEPTIVE. right when you thought things were going okay, SURPRISE, RUN, BETRAYAL
I have so many thoughts. So many.
For now let’s talk about Nehmenia.
I dislike the slimy thoughts of reading someone think pity and want to control the others behavior for their own quote unquote good. Because if you were the hero that got to make the deciison then you would have been.
But to see this fake friend seek out their company , knowing they later want to control the others behavior. The goal to seek out the other person and expose their vulnerabilities. The goal was to gain her trust. Without giving anything on the other end.
It always disturbed me!
I would later compare Chaol and his self righteousness for a capital “Cause” that only matters when he’s doing it well all by himself. I mean I would want my chosen King to be involved in alllll the dangerous deceptive stuff going on before it gets worse but some people have never had “worse”. until later in life. Chaol experiences his first real fall very late. And he doesn’t handle it well. And that’s my fault? We have to read a whole ass book to redeem him? (that’s my bad guys)
Mort was also a sarcastic little shit. I always assumed he knew more than he said. And I hated that. It felt like the paternal family who knew the blood curse secrets and didn’t want to tell the newest generation. Sure there was a bigger plot at mind but if you don’t trust a hoe – there’s probably a reason
And ghosts hidden in the castle who appear for limited times and give bare information? Never good. Why tris their intentions at all.
Prince Dorian had Main Character the entire time which made it all the more loveable of his arc from playboy to hot warrior prince vibes.
꧁The Writing Style꧂
For me I loved this sequel after having read SEVERAL sequel slumps that failed to keep the magic of the series alive, I was frustrated with authors. This book did NOT have that issue. These first two books feel written together, very similar points of view and mentally growth of our heroines and the book world biggest. This this series gets stronger and bigger with every book.
The universe is huge with lots of powers in place. Celena is still dabbling in the kingdoms court politics that get darker and darker
And finally at the end of this book, she’s ready to even admit the past.
