Scarlett St. Clair KNOWS how to write dark romantic fantasy. And this woman took that talent, dropped it into a historical romance setting with a tragic, dramatic relationship involving a VAMPIRE KING, and gave me every reason to embrace the fucking darkness.

Because apparently, I am in my I want the husband to be terrifying to everyone except his wife era.

And honestly? I AM THRIVING.

꧁The Hook꧂

Isolde de Lara walks into her wedding with one tiny problem: she fully intends for it to be her husband’s funeral.

Unfortunately, her groom is a vampire king who is VERY difficult to kill. And when your new husband threatens to turn you into the very thing you hate most, well…

Marriage is off to a delightful start, isn’t it?

But here’s the thing about Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev: the more Isolde discovers about the monster she’s married, the less certain she becomes about who the real danger is.

And the chemistry? The secrets? The WHY THE HELL DID HE CHOOSE HER?

Oh, honey.

What’s next…

꧁The World Building꧂

Vampires. Royal courts. Political power. A marriage built on war, revenge, and an assassination attempt.

Their Union Is His Revenge.

EXCUSE ME???

Isolde is marrying vampire king Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev to end a years-long war, with every intention of killing him. Unfortunately for her assassination plans, Adrian has other ideas.

And the man isn’t exactly subtle about his threats.

“I will raise you as the undead.”

SIR. That is certainly one way to handle marital disagreements.

What I love is how the political arrangement and the supernatural world feed into the relationship. Isolde isn’t just navigating a marriage she never wanted. She’s entering a brutal vampire court where she’s surrounded by predators, expected to survive, and forced to figure out exactly who her husband is.

And the longer she spends with Adrian, the more complicated everything becomes.

Because the court isn’t even the thing she fears most.

It’s HIM.

꧁The Characters꧂

Isolde de Lara is the ultimate female power fantasy.

Strong. Just. Wise. Willing to get her hands dirty.

She isn’t some helpless little princess waiting for a man to solve all her problems. This woman has her own convictions, her own agenda, and absolutely no intention of quietly accepting a life someone else has decided for her.

She is willing to fight for what she believes in, even when the odds are stacked against her.

And THAT is what I love about a heroine.

I want a woman who can stand in front of a king, know exactly how dangerous he is, and still decide she’s not going to make things easy for him.

Meanwhile, Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev.

Oh, this man.

The perfect anti-hero. Fierce, savage, merciless, unpredictable, and ENTICING AS HELL.

I love a male lead who keeps me wondering what the fuck he’s going to do next. Give me the danger. Give me the power. Give me the man who could make an entire room tremble and then turn around and make his wife question every single thing she thought she knew about him.

And Adrian has that delicious quality where Isolde is never entirely certain what she’s getting from him.

Her jailor? Her savior? Her lover?

Her monster?

YES. LET US EMBRACE THE DARKNESS, SHALL WE?

Especially when it’s HIS QUEEN.

꧁The Romance꧂

Can we talk about the WIFE TROPE for a second?

Because I am SO into this right now.

The marriage. The possessiveness. The question of what happens when a man who is supposed to be your enemy starts treating you like you are something precious to him.

And the fact that Isolde is still plotting against him makes it even better.

This isn’t a sweet little arrangement where everyone politely catches feelings and communicates their intentions over tea.

These two have HISTORY, danger, political stakes, and an absolutely delicious amount of tension between them.

And the chemistry???

INCREDIBLE.

“She is my wife.”

OH.

OH, WE ARE SAYING THINGS LIKE THAT NOW???

Because this is the kind of moment that gets me. Not just the attraction, but the way a declaration like that can carry weight when the woman standing beside you is still trying to figure out whether she can trust you.

Isolde doesn’t expect him to respect their marriage vows, particularly when she’s actively considering murdering him.

And yet, there he is.

She is my wife.

SIR. I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS EXACTLY THE SORT OF NONSENSE I AM HERE FOR.

And then there’s the delicious uncertainty surrounding Adrian’s intentions. Why did this king choose Isolde as his consort? What does he actually want from her? How much of what she believes about him is true?

That push and pull is EVERYTHING.

I want the obsession. I want the unpredictability. I want a man who is absolutely gone for his woman, even when the relationship is messy, dangerous, and full of reasons they shouldn’t be together.

I want to be sitting there thinking, Oh, he’s dangerous.

And then, two seconds later:

Oh no. He’s dangerous AND married.

WE LOVE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

꧁The Emotional Damage꧂

What really makes this story work for me is that the romance doesn’t exist in a bubble.

Isolde is learning more about Adrian, his past, and the world she’s been thrust into. Her understanding of him changes, and so does her understanding of the people around her.

The line between monster and man becomes increasingly complicated.

And when you’re reading a story where love, identity, and the fate of the world become tangled together, you KNOW you’re in for trouble.

“Our love will damn this world.”

OH, WE ARE DOING TRAGIC, WORLD-ENDING LOVE NOW?

Scarlett, ma’am.

I see you.

There is something irresistible about a romance where the feelings are enormous, the consequences are potentially catastrophic, and loving the wrong person might cost you absolutely everything.

Give me the drama. Give me the angst. Give me the impossible choices.

I did not come here to be reasonable.

꧁Overall꧂

FIVE FUCKING STARS. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Scarlett St. Clair knows how to deliver the dark romantic fantasy experience, and I loved seeing that talent brought into this historical vampire romance setting.

Isolde is a heroine worth rooting for, Adrian is the kind of morally grey anti-hero who makes you want to throw your standards out the window, and their chemistry is EVERYTHING.

But let’s be honest about what really got me.

THE WIFE TROPE. THE OBSESSION. THE DANGEROUS KING WHO HAS CHOSEN HIS QUEEN.

I am clearly in a phase of my reading life where I want my fictional men powerful, unpredictable, a little terrifying, and completely incapable of being normal about the women they love.

Is that healthy?

Irrelevant. This is fantasy.

And if you’re going to give me a vampire king with a dangerous reputation, a wife who refuses to bow, and a relationship wrapped in revenge, secrets, and delicious tension, then you had better believe I am pulling up a chair.

Let us embrace the darkness.

Especially when the darkness has a crown.

And calls her his wife.
