Oh, I do LOVE a forced-to-work-together situation. Give me two people who have no business being in each other’s personal space, throw a supernatural problem at them, and watch the chaos unfold. YES, PLEASE.
A Sensual Summoning was SO SO GOOD at giving me little moments that had me grinning at my Kindle. This was a solid three-star read with a love interest whose POV was honestly one of my favorite parts.
꧁The Characters꧂
RAFAEL. SIR.
One of my favorite things about a love interest is getting inside his head and discovering that the intimidating supernatural man is, in fact, a little bit of a disaster when it comes to normal human interaction.
Rafael does NOT understand modern customs, and watching him try to navigate them was refreshing and genuinely funny. He sees Faye give someone her number and starts trying to interpret the situation through a completely different cultural lens.
“Maker, he proposed.”
SIR. 😭 The fact that he jumps to the possibility of a bride price is exactly the kind of ridiculous POV humor I want more of. He isn’t just a brooding man standing in a corner looking pretty. We get to see the gears turning, the misunderstandings happening, and the conclusions he’s drawing with his entire chest.
And he’s lowkey socially anxious??? Adorable. I love getting those little insights into a love interest’s thought process, especially when the outside presentation and the internal experience are giving two VERY different things.
And then we get the little one trope.
“I don’t like lies, little one.”
OH. OH, I’M LISTENING.
Add sweetheart into the mix and suddenly I am paying attention to every single thing this man says. The pet names, the possessive edge, the little glimpses of what’s going on in his head—Rachel J. Roman, I see you. 👀
꧁The Romance꧂
The forced-to-work-together trope is one of my favorites because it creates so many opportunities for characters to get under each other’s skin, learn things they otherwise wouldn’t, and find themselves in situations where walking away isn’t an option.
Rafael’s POV adds an extra layer of entertainment because we aren’t only watching the interactions happen. We’re getting his interpretations of them, too. Sometimes the man is working with an entirely different set of assumptions from everyone else in the room. And I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE’S THINKING.
The social awkwardness, the misunderstandings, the pet names. Those little moments gave this romance personality, and I appreciated the humor woven into the love interest’s perspective.
꧁The World Building꧂
The setup involving witches, daemons, and the gradual decline of magic on Earth gave the story an intriguing supernatural foundation. The idea that magic has been draining away over centuries, with nobody realizing the full implications, creates an interesting backdrop for the story.
There’s history here, supernatural consequences, and a larger problem beyond the immediate romantic shenanigans. I always appreciate when a paranormal romance gives me an actual world to explore alongside the relationship.
꧁Overall꧂
A Sensual Summoning was a fun read with a love interest whose internal monologue genuinely entertained me. Rafael not understanding modern customs, his socially anxious little moments, and the little one trope all earned their place on my personal list of things I enjoy seeing in romance.
Was this an all-time favorite? No. Was I entertained? Absolutely.
Sometimes a book is enjoyable, delivers moments that make you grin, and gives you a trope combination you already know you love without necessarily becoming an obsession. And that’s where this one landed for me: a solid, enjoyable three-star read with some particularly delicious character moments.
If you love forced-to-work-together setups, supernatural romance, and a love interest whose intimidating exterior does not prepare you for the nonsense happening inside his head, this one might be worth adding to your TBR.
Also, Rachel J. Roman, I see you with the little one business. 👀
