House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Lets talk book theories… major hella spoilers ahead
Spoiler
Theory: Connection between Bryce and Azriel
Unlikely. Predictions about mates and family seem a little too much even for Maas. I do want the origin of these weapons and their world traveling abilities to play a large role. Anyone else think these horn and swords sound an awful lot like Wyrdkeys? Maas’s previous books with bloodline or magic connection to swords definitely come to mind, potentially a legend from one world had traveled there from another? An older shadowsinger?
Theory: Hunt is not end game
Unlikely. The whole fae scent change is biggest evidence piece. Their similar Carranam-like abilities to share powers being another. At first I was waiting for Aidas to pull a Rhysand. His role is clearly not done as he recognizes Bryce’s starlight, but changing love interesting at this point seems unlikely. Hunt would have to die first in my opinion. And the whole potential poly mate situation… i mean i wouldnt hate it but really guys?
Theory: The “Daglin”that Rhysand references in A court of silver flames are the Asteri
Likely. I have been having sooo much fun rereading these two series and focusing more on the worldbuilding and mythology that I tend to skim during first reads. I do see potential here where the Asteri were kicked out of one world and now hope to do it again by comparing legends from both worlds.
Foreshadowing… the Under King’s storytelling of Luna and the old beliefs “when Urd was not a goddess but a force, winding between worlds? When she was a vat of life, a mother to all, a secret language of the universe?”
Hunt reflecting on fate, “Hel is another world. Another planet. Aidas said so—months ago, I mean. The demons worship different gods than we do, but what happens when the worlds overlap? When demons come here, do their gods come with them? And all of us, the Vanir … we all came from elsewhere. We were immigrants into Midgard. But what became of our home worlds? Our home gods? Do they still pay attention to us? Remember us?”
Theory: The Viper Queen is only winner and respected power I see here.
Alllll the other “power players” in this city are too busy with their own inner turmoil bullshit (Sabine, Autumn King, River Queen) while Viper is jusy power collecting favors, beings, and weapons. I would not be surprised if she already knew about the Asteri or rememebers her old world.
Theory: House of Flame and Shadow and “The Queen of Flame and Shadow, the Heir of Fire, Aelin of the Wildfire, Fire heart… She burned through each title, even as she became them”
Oh gods. I dont know how i would react to a -marvel all in this together in the end- moment. I worry the characters’ personalities would all clash, the POVs would be overwhelming, and plot holes would become canyons. I think this little easter egg more points to the connectedness of magic between these worlds and that Aelin could easily be part of that court. But at this point, nothing is off limits for Maas so Aelin could show up
Theory: Nehemia is Danika in a different font
Yes. Nehemia is Chaol is Danika. They all chose something bigger over an individual and then hurt that individual. It hurts to read and ya just feel bad for them. I do think this was done to sprinkle in more details of what was happening and give a blanket excuse why Bryce had aBsOlUtElY no clue
Theory: Hunt is more than an angel
Likely. Yeah but half what and half what. There is so much subtle hints to think throughout this book. looking at all the starlight and starborn powers, ya cant just dismiss all the subtle references to his godlike power, the fact his name Orion is a constellation, and these subtle quotes, “Orion was bred to be receptive to our kind.”, “Maybe it’s because your scent is wrong, angel.” “Mordoc angled his head with mocking assessment. “Not like any other angel I’ve scented.”
Theory: Unnamed wolf is Ithan’s mate
Potential. We’ve met some other important nameless characters that immediately come to mind during this scene. As an Alpha Fendyr this character will be big but her relationships with the other characters is still murky. Potential connection to Mordor? I dont think everyone neEeDs a mate but Ithan does deserve some happiness after all that pining.
Theory: Released dragon, Ari
Possible. Flynn’s mate. Idea that she is connected and or related to Amren which would be funny if they were enemies in their old world and must band together for this one. Either way, having a connection would be an interesting segway to know more about Amren’s past and the Asteri’s future
Theory: I am IronMan.
“A Vanir warrior could climb inside and essentially wear it like an exoskeleton—like armor.”
Unlikely… But not impossible
Whats next?
Now we have to think about all of CC’s characters of having come from somewhere. Which opens a worlds of possiblities….yeah i said it
Jesiba reveal your secrets
Fury, get your head in the game. Her character feels so underused to me that she has so many contacts and informants and connections… but she is only used as an info dump and never directly interacts with the group makes her feel like such a filler character and are they even really friends?
Tharion jumped out of the fire into the frying pan
“Theia’s other daughter got away—vanished into the night. I never learned of her fate.”
Looking ahead I see two possiblities:
1) We had to start without you
Bryce’s interactions with Rhysand will either be helping her with info/training OR providing troops. Once she returns to her world, I can see the Hel starting the war without her that she comes back in thr middle of things to try and help turn the tide. Also considering the potential factor that time could move significantly different between worlds plus travel time
2) its time to group up
Bryce tries to convince Rhysand to help and link up with Hel. Rigelus described older worlds that had kicked the Asteri out. Bryce could spin that it be Rhysand’s world so either link up to fight together… or face them alone later.
