I went into an arranged marriage trope THANG, and honestly? This was good! Vampires, a prince, a forced marriage, supernatural politics, and a magical world with enough going on to keep me entertained.
BUT, MY DARLINGS.
I think I wanted this to be darker than it was. 😂
I need a little more oh, this man is genuinely dangerous and I might need to reevaluate my taste in fictional men energy. The ingredients were there, and I enjoyed myself, but I wanted the darkness to bite a little harder.
꧁The World Building꧂
Vampires, faeries, gods, multiple kingdoms, ancient grudges, and a mysterious Tether? YES, PLEASE. There is plenty here to play with, and I liked that the marriage wasn’t the only thing happening in this world.
“Old things long forgotten are stirring. The gods are angry and the balance is broken. The harbinger is the key. Promise me you will keep her safe.”
EXCUSE ME??? The gods are angry, the balance is broken, and apparently somebody has a very important job to do. Now THAT is the kind of fantasy setup that gets my attention. Give me the mythology! Give me the ancient secrets! Give me the consequences of messing with forces nobody fully understands!
I wanted more of that darker, dangerous atmosphere because the foundation was absolutely there.
꧁The Characters꧂
Luna is suddenly thrown into a completely unfamiliar world, married off to a vampire prince, and expected to figure out how to survive among creatures who could very easily make her their next snack.
And honestly, being dropped into another country where you don’t know the customs, the people, or even where the bathroom is sounds like a nightmare WITHOUT the immortal bloodsuckers.
“I was alone in a new country and I didn’t even know where the bathroom was”
GIRL. 😭 The supernatural danger is one thing. Not knowing where the bathroom is? A completely different crisis.
And then there’s Sebastian.
Sir, you are a vampire prince. You have fangs, wings, shadows, and a whole supernatural reputation to maintain. I expect a certain level of menace from you.
We do get glimpses of that danger, especially when the story lets us see how ruthless the vampire world can be.
“They all deserved what they got. I’ve never killed an innocent.”
OH? So we have a man with a body count and a moral code. That distinction matters! I like a character who can be dangerous without being written as someone who indiscriminately hurts innocent people. It gives us something more interesting to work with than he’s evil because the author said he’s evil.
BUT I wanted to feel more of that dangerous edge throughout the reading experience.
꧁The Romance꧂
ARRANGED MARRIAGE. VAMPIRE PRINCE. SUPERNATURAL BOND.
Do you understand why I picked this up?!
And there are moments where Sebastian absolutely knows how to make an entrance.
“I thought I told you to stay put.”
THE GROWL. THE SHADOWS. THE VAMPIRE PRINCE SHOWING UP.
Ma’am, I understand the reaction. 😂
“You’re my wife,” I said, as if that explained everything. “Estrella is not.”
SIR. THE CONFIDENCE WITH WHICH YOU THINK THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.
Honestly, that is the sort of possessive energy an arranged marriage romance can have so much fun with. There is something delicious about a man who considers the marriage a perfectly adequate explanation for his behavior.
But here’s my thing: I wanted MORE.
More intensity. More darkness. More of that deliciously unsettling feeling that being married to this man might be the best and worst decision of her life.
The romance had moments I enjoyed, but I wanted it to push further into the darker side of the trope.
Because apparently, I cannot simply enjoy a perfectly respectable vampire husband. I need the fictional man to come with a few more warning labels. 🤷🏻♀️
꧁The Plot꧂
Thankfully, there is more going on than the marriage itself.
The Tether, the gods, the mystery surrounding the harbinger, and the danger involving the people around Luna give the story additional threads to pull on.
And Luna isn’t content to sit around waiting for everyone else to solve her problems.
“Tether or no Tether, I had to find it.”
YES. She has her own priorities, and the marriage bond isn’t going to stop her from pursuing them.
There are enough mysteries and supernatural complications to make me curious about where the series is going. I can appreciate a book that lays groundwork for a larger story, especially when there are gods and ancient secrets involved.
I just wanted the overall experience to hit me a little harder.
꧁Overall꧂
I enjoyed Tethered! The arranged marriage trope was appealing, the vampire-fantasy setting had plenty of potential, and Sebastian gave me moments that made me understand the appeal.
But this is where my personal taste comes in.
I went looking for a darker fantasy romance, and while this book has dangerous supernatural creatures and some darker elements, I wanted MORE of that darkness to seep into the romance itself.
I wanted the tension to get under my skin. I wanted the vampire prince to have me clutching my imaginary pearls. I wanted to question whether this marriage was going to save Luna or completely ruin her life.
Instead, I had a good time without quite getting the full meal I was craving.
And that’s okay! Not every vampire romance needs to drag me into the darkest corners of the fictional basement.
Sometimes the book is good, the premise works, and the reader simply wanted a different level of feral.
Would I recommend it? Yes, especially if you enjoy arranged-marriage fantasy romance with vampires, supernatural politics, and a larger mystery developing alongside the relationship.
If you need your romance significantly darker, with a more intense morally grey love interest, I’d temper those expectations.
Me? I’m learning that when I say I want a vampire husband, what I apparently mean is that I want a vampire husband who makes everyone else in the room nervous.
Is that too much to ask? 😂🖤
